Monday Musings

  • For the past three weeks it feels like we’ve been stuck in an endless cycle of coughs, colds, and fevers, culminating last Tuesday with Missy bedridden with a kidney infection and Rowan on the couch with 102° temperature. I had managed to stay relatively healthy until last week as well, but then ended up spending Wednesday-Saturday in a NyQuil-induced haze. Thankfully, I think we’re all on the rebound once again (knocking on wood furiously), just in time to enjoy the warm weather reintroducing itself to the midwest.
  • Speaking of weather, after the winter that just won’t quit any temperature above 50 feels like beach weather. So when Des Moines broke 70° for the first time this year on Sunday, we made sure to take full advantage with nature walking

Even though it was quite windy, man…did it feel awesome after being cooped up all winter long.

  • This warm weather hasn’t arrived a moment too soon; we’re running low on indoor entertainment ideas

…although this week still looks to be chilly and wet, warmer temps are on tap again for next weekend; hopefully we’ve turned the corner on this winter for good.

  • It seems like finding time for friends has been fewer and farther between these past few months (again, I blame the weather), but we’ve still managed to make the most of it when we do get the chance. I helped good pal Eric celebrate his 30th recently, teaming up with his awesome wife Kels to set up a surprise guy’s night downtown with dinner at Zombie Burger

  • I don’t think I mentioned this, but Miss & I had the chance to check out ZB and Up//Down a few months ago on what seems like the first date night out we had alone together in forever. Totally awesome.

  • We also recently fit it some Florer cousin (and 2nd cousin) time: dinner at our place with the whole family…

…followed by Steve, Cindy, and Shan volunteering to watch the whole gang (our four girls plus Everett and Reilly Rose) while we took a quick jaunt to Confluence for a few brews with Kate and Elliot (Missy’s cuz).

So fun…hopefully many more gathering to follow this summer!

  • Finally on a more solemn note… Most of my fellow Iowan’s reading this already know, but for those viewing from more exotic locales: Des Moines lost a true architectural icon this past weekend when the 115-year-old Younkers Building in the heart of downtown went up in a massive fire early Saturday morning.

I am not well versed in the history of building itself, but we’re all in shock of losing such a cornerstone piece of this city and long time residents have been lamenting our loss. Thankfully, despite the size of the blaze…no injuries were reported. Praise God!

That’s all from the homestead tonight…pray with us for warmer weather! Happy Monday, and have a great week 🙂
