It goes without saying that at times it can be a struggle to find new and exciting ways to entertain four active kiddos.
We’re proud, card carrying, member supporting Science Center, Zoo, and Living History Farms patrons, which don’t get me wrong, has been a fantastic investment. But when a successful outing hinges on temperatures that are decidedly warmer than the majority of days this winter for 2/3 of our options (LHF is even closed November through May), we are constantly on the lookout for new activities once the temperatures start to dip.
Which brings us to our latest adventure: ice skating.
In the midst of the dark winter doldrums, Jovie mentioned to us that she’d like to try (of all things) ice skating. As with most preschooler-hatched ideas, we mildly entertained the thought but knew there was a good chance she’d forget about it soon enough.
But she persisted, and when Missy snapped up a two-for-one admission ticket on Groupon, so we knew that we had to give it a shot. Plus, kids under five are free…so a family date-night plan was hatched (minus Lola, sadly…she hung out with Grandma and Grandpa. Hopefully she’ll be ready next winter!)
Having never been, we elected to try out Des Moines’ new-ish river-front outdoor rink and crossed our fingers for a *moderate* February evening. When central Iowa reached the mid-thirties last week, we sprang at the chance. The rink was just big enough to not feel over-crowded and the city skyline provided a fantastic backdrop to our fun. And after a rough and humbling start, the girls (and their parents) had the time of their lives!
